Abstract: One of the discussions on the agenda in the social service profession is about the professional work of social workers in education policy, particularly in public basic education networks; an issue that gained greater social importance after the enactment of law 13,935/2019. Contributing with some reflections on the instrumentality of social work in education, based on ontological constructions by researchers who investigate the topic, is the central objective of this article. The instrumentality of social work in education articulates dimensions and competencies, supported by the ethical-political project of the profession, which places it in a field of mediations, enriched in critical-dialectic rationality. In this way, this study presents theoretical-critical foundations and analyzes on education policy, social work in education and the instrumentality of the profession in basic education, based on a qualitative methodological approach, exploratory and descriptive objectives, and procedures based on research bibliographical. Therefore, reasoning about education and the different dimensions that encompass the universe of social service instrumentality in education is to contribute to the mobilization of knowledge, skills, attitudes and results that can collaborate in one of the purposes of the work of social workers in education, which is namely: the defense and feasibility of one of the fundamental social rights – education – which can enhance the socio-political protagonism of segments of the population, especially the working class.
