Abstract: This article examines interpretations of the concept of "people" across different historical periods and political contexts in Brazil, focusing on the March of the Hundred Thousand in 1968 and the protests of 2023. It analyzes the emblematic photo by Evandro Teixeira from 1968, which represented the defense of democracy, in contrast to the 2023 slogan "the Supreme is the people," used by far-right groups to challenge the authority of the Federal Supreme Court. The analysis addresses how the 1968 photograph is perceived decades later, showing its visual impact and the variations in its interpretation. The text explores theories of memory and post-memory, referencing Paul Ricoeur, Marianne Hirsch, and Walter Benjamin, to understand how past events are reinterpreted. It discusses the instrumentalization of the term "people" and how this can affect democratic principles, considering memory as a phenomenon subject to selection and distortion, and often used to legitimize political agendas.
