Abstract: The United Nations General Assembly recognized on July 1, 2004, that the Holy See, in its capacity as an Observer State, would be granted the rights and privileges of participation in the sessions and proceedings of the General Assembly and in international conferences convened under the auspices of the Assembly or other United Nations organs, as well as in the organization's conferences, as established in the annex to the resolution. Interestingly, the resolution refers to the status of the Holy See as an Observer State rather than a Non-Member State, maintaining it as a Permanent Observer Mission. This positioning makes it relevant to understand the current role, as well as the path taken in the recent history, of the Roman Catholic Church in international organizations, focusing on the UN and its agencies, as it represents the ultimate example of such an arrangement in the contemporary international system. To achieve this goal, this work is divided into three main sections: i) the foundational context of the UN and the division between State and Church in the Vatican case; ii) the need for Human Rights to transcend religious morality; and, finally, iii) the shift of Catholicism to the Global South and the consequent modernization of its state agenda in multilateral forums.
