Abstract: The research addresses Youth and Adult Education (EJA), highlighting its historical relevance and the challenges faced over time in the Brazilian context. The objective is to analyze the factors that influence the dropout and school permanence of EJA students in the municipal education network of Cametá, Pará. The investigation seeks to answer the central question: what factors interfere in the evasion and permanence of young people and adults in EJA in the municipality of Cametá" The study was conducted through a qualitative approach, using field research with semi-structured interviews conducted with students, teachers and managers of EJA in the municipality of Cametá. The data analysis was based on a critical perspective, considering the historical, social and economic contexts that shape the reality of EJA in the region. The findings of the research show that school dropout is associated with factors such as financial difficulties, incompatibility between class schedules and students' working hours, and the lack of effective public policies to support the modality. On the other hand, permanence is linked to the engagement of teachers, the relevance of the content to the students' daily lives and family support. It is concluded that overcoming the challenges of EJA requires consistent and integrated public policies at the federal, state and municipal levels, with a view to ensuring adequate subsidies in all dimensions of the educational system.
