Abstract: This chapter presents a critical reflection on the extension project “Sustainable Attitudes in Quilombos,” developed by students from UERJ-ZO starting in 2022. Initially focused on the Quilombo Dona Bilina, the initiative expanded to other quilombola communities in Rio de Janeiro, promoting sustainable water practices and dialogue between academic and traditional knowledge. The chapter discusses the challenges of engaging community leaders, the strategies used to build trust, and the role of internal meetings and theoretical debates. It also addresses structural barriers faced by quilombola students in higher education and highlights cultural expressions as forms of resistance. Ultimately, the project reaffirms the transformative potential of university extension through mutual learning, social engagement, and the recognition of traditional knowledge.
