A ATITUDE DE BRASILEIROS E AMERICANOS PERANTE A ORDEM IGUALITÁRIA: TEORIA DEMOCRÁTICA COMPARADA
Tocqueville, na obra prima De
la Démocratie en Amérique, estuda os
principais traços psicológicos e morais e as
instituições políticas dos primeiros americanos,
descendentes dos peregrinos protestantes.
Estabeleceu algumas das “causas” da
extraordinária e excepcional condição social dos
americanos, seja seu estado democrático, seja
sua prosperidade material. Autor de Carnavais,
Malandros e Heróis, Roberto DaMatta é
considerado um importante comparativista
de inspiração tocquevilliana. Ele explora a
diferença entre a “igualdade dos americanos”
e a “igualdade à brasileira”, discussão que
retomamos neste artigo. Os Estados Unidos são
uma sociedade alicerçada na repulsa à ideia de
hierarquia, sendo a igualdade era um valor real
desde a colonização. Ao contrário, no Brasil,
desde a chegada dos portugueses, tivemos
uma sociedade rural, patriarcal e desigual que
cultivou ideia da existência de nobres e plebeus
e nutrindo grande desprezo pelo labor manual.
Apesar das leis igualitárias, no Brasil, a ajuda
de um padrinho faz uma grande diferença.

Abstract:
Tocqueville, in the masterpiece De
la Démocratie en Amérique, studies the main
psychological and moral features and the political
institutions of the first Americans, descendants
of Protestant pilgrims. He established some of
the “causes” of the extraordinary and exceptional
social condition of Americans, either their
democratic state or their material prosperity.
Author of Carnavais, Malandros e Heróis,
Roberto DaMatta is considered an important
compartivist inspired in Tocqueville. He explores
the difference between the “American equality”
and the “Brazilian equality,” a discussion that
we will recall in this article. The United States
is a society based on the rejection of the idea of
hierarchy, where equality was a real value since
the colonization. On the contrary, in Brazil, since
the arrival of the Portuguese, we had a rural,
patriarchal and unequal society that cultivated
idea of the existence of nobles and plebeians
and nourishing great disdain for manual labor.
Despite the egalitarian laws, in Brazil, the aid of
a “godfather” makes a big difference.
