Abstract: This literature review article analyzes the available scientific evidence on the impacts of using disposable and reusable fabrics on occupational safety and operational costs in the Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD). Objective: To identify the advantages and disadvantages of each type of material, considering biosafety, operational efficiency, and economic feasibility aspects. Method: National and international databases were consulted over the past ten years, including SciELO, LILACS, and PubMed. Results/Discussion: The qualitative analysis of the publications revealed that although reusable fabrics are traditionally perceived as more economical, the indirect costs and occupational risks associated with their reprocessing may outweigh the initial advantages. Disposable fabrics, in turn, offer greater safety and streamline workflow but present challenges related to acquisition cost and environmental impact. Conclusion: The findings reinforce the need for management decisions supported by cost-benefit analyses and the promotion of both staff and patient safety.
