Abstract: Septic polyarthritis (SP) in foals is characterized by an infectious process affecting the synovial membrane and, in severe cases, the subchondral bone, leading to intense pain, lameness, and possible irreversible joint dysfunction. Its highest incidence occurs in neonates during the first 30 days of life, mainly due to failure of passive immunity transfer (FPIT), which facilitates the hematogenous dissemination of bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Actinobacillus equuli. Diagnosis should be based on history, clinical signs, laboratory tests, and imaging, with synovial fluid analysis being essential. Treatment involves systemic and local antibiotic therapy, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, joint drainage, and intensive supportive care, with arthroscopy being required in refractory cases.Prognosis is reserved and depends on early diagnosis, the number of joints affected, and the etiologic agent involved. Preventive measures include proper peripartum management, umbilical care, and monitoring of passive immunity transfer. The aim of this study is to review the literature on septic polyarthritis in foals and to report a clinical case attended at the Veterinary Hospital of the University of Franca (UNIFRAN), emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis and prompt therapeutic intervention.
