MÚSICA NO PROCESSO DA CONSTRUÇÃO DE IDENTIDADE NACIONAL E CULTURAL DO POVO DE TIMOR-LESTE
This paper seeks to reflect on the meanings of music and Timorese music. The problem that guides this reflection is: to what extent or in what way can the meanings of music, especially Timorese music, contribute to the processes of building the national and cultural identity of the local people in Timor-Leste? The analysis is based on qualitative theoretical and methodological aspects, using theoretical study and bibliographic research. The discussion covers the meaning of music and the link between music and cultural identity in the Timorese context, in line with studies by Filipe (2018); Hanna (2018); Hall (2016); Malerba (2014); Kiakilir, (2013); Paulo (2013); Horizonte (2012); Sousa (2007); Castro (2007); Benedict (2005); De Nora (2000), Wolton (2000); Blacking (1995); Cruz (1993); Martins (1985); Correia (1984); Tame (1984); Herzheld (1981); Gorina (1971); Tomas and Graça (1958); Freitas (1955); Corazzi (1883), etc. Understanding the contribution of historical processes of (Timorese) music is extremely necessary, because before Portuguese colonization and the Indonesian invasion, the island of Timor was already known as a unique territory, and there were no modern industries as there are today. All rules between family lines were regulated according to the customs of local cultural tradition. The practice of cultural traditions served as a basis for uniting or dividing people. Here, cultural practice became a kind of traditional court that had an important influence on determining relationships, good or bad, and on survival between different lineages, between ethnic groups, and between families. From this understanding, we can see which elements of Timorese music contribute to the process of building the national and cultural identity of the Maubere people.

Abstract:
This paper seeks to reflect on the meanings of music and Timorese music. The problem that guides this reflection is: to what extent or in what way can the meanings of music, especially Timorese music, contribute to the processes of building the national and cultural identity of the local people in Timor-Leste?
