Abstract: Caregiver burden is a multifactorial phenomenon that primarily affects individuals who provide continuous care to functionally dependent people, such as older adults, patients with chronic illnesses, or individuals with disabilities. This condition can significantly compromise the caregiver’s physical, emotional, social, and financial well-being. This study aims to analyze the main factors associated with caregiver burden and identify preventive and coping strategies described in the scientific literature. It is an |integrative literature review. The search was conducted in the PubMed, BVS, and MedLine databases using the following descriptors: “caregiver burden,” “informal caregivers,” “prevention,” and “quality of life.” Studies published between 2020 and 2025, in Portuguese and English, that addressed risk factors and preventive strategies were selected. The most frequently associated factors with caregiver burden include time spent caregiving, lack of social support, level of patient dependency, financial difficulties, and lack of caregiver training. The consequences involve physical exhaustion, depressive symptoms, social isolation, and poor quality of life. Highlighted preventive strategies were: psychological support, health education programs, support groups, division of tasks among family members, and multidisciplinary interventions focused on caregiver self-care. Caregiver burden is an increasing reality in the context of population aging and chronic diseases. Early identification of risk factors and the implementation of effective preventive strategies are essential to preserve caregivers’ health and improve the quality of care provided. Strengthening public policies to support caregivers is crucial in this process.
