Abstract: Volunteer work has historically demonstrated the improvement and development of communities by addressing local needs, social welfare and the bonds of solidarity and union among its members. This research study was conducted in the municipality of Villa de Álvarez, Colima, in order to determine the feasibility of contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). A mixed design approach was used to gain a comprehensive understanding and meet the objectives, combining both qualitative and quantitative methods through interviews and surveys. Levels of awareness, availability of volunteer opportunities, and level of community involvement were defined as variables. A participatory approach was used, involving members of the city council in the analysis of relevant aspects. Semi-structured interviews with government officials and questionnaires distributed to community residents were used to gather information. Data were analyzed through coding and categorization; patterns and emerging themes were identified. Quantitative data were analyzed using statistical software to obtain numerical results, and qualitative and quantitative results were compared to verify conclusions and gain understanding. Results showed high awareness of community volunteerism and identified multiple opportunities for involvement. The engagement of the community in initiatives that actively support the Sustainable Development Goals was highlighted. To conclude, volunteering is feasible and can be a key ally in achieving the SDGs. Community and government cooperation should be strengthened to realize the full potential for local sustainable development. Research findings provide a strong foundation for future initiatives and programs that contribute to sustainable growth in the region.
