Abstract: This paper critically analyzes sustainability in architecture by contrasting the international hegemonic narrative with vernacular architecture as an alternative. Hegemonic architecture, driven by capitalism, commodifies sustainability for profit and imposes standards that disregard local realities and cultural identity. In contrast, vernacular architecture emerges as an authentic socio-environmental solution, using low-impact local materials and techniques, reflecting cultural values, and being economically accessible. Although historically stigmatized, techniques such as adobe and rammed earth are now being standardized. The study advocates for the reassessment and promotion of vernacular architecture, integrating it with current technologies to enable truly sustainable and culturally rooted construction that improves quality of life.
