Abstract: This article analyzes the perceptions of quilombola students at the Federal University of Bahia regarding the Programa Bolsa Permanência (PBP), established by Ordinance MEC nº 389/2013 and amended by Ordinance MEC nº 1.999/2023. The research, exploratory in nature and based on a mixed-methods approach, involved nineteen quilombola students benefiting from the program, through a structured questionnaire combining objective and open-ended questions. Quantitative data allowed for the identification of the students’ sociodemographic profile, while qualitative responses revealed the meanings attributed to the financial aid. The results show that the scholarship is considered essential for remaining in higher education, as it covers basic expenses such as food, transportation, and housing. However, students also pointed out shortcomings, especially the insufficient value, excessive bureaucracy, and delays in payments. The study concludes that, although limited, the PBP plays a fundamental role in reducing dropout rates and ensuring minimum subsistence conditions, confirming findings in the literature on the relevance and challenges of student retention policies in Brazil.
