Abstract: Self-directed learning has established itself as one of the most discussed approaches in the field of education, especially in contexts marked by rapid technological change, the globalization of knowledge, and the valorization of individual autonomy. This bibliographic research analyzes the characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages of this type of learning, offering a critical reflection based on contemporary references. The central premise adopted is that autonomy in learning is not equivalent to a solitary process, but rather the ability of individuals to actively manage their educational trajectory, which involves identifying their needs, setting goals, curating materials, and assessing the results achieved. Among the main advantages pointed out are flexibility, intrinsic motivation, and suitability to the paradigm of lifelong education. On the other hand, the challenges cannot be overlooked: issues such as the need for high discipline, difficulty in accessing technologies, and the risk of inequalities in the learning process reveal important limitations. The study points out that self-directed learning can be a powerful path to the integral development of the individual, provided it is accompanied by educational policies, institutional support, and consistent pedagogical practices that promote equity. It can therefore be concluded that self-directed learning, although promising, requires planning, intentionality, and adequate mediation so that its potential can be fully exploited in the contemporary educational scenario.
