Abstract: Milk is the main food source for beef calves until the fourth month of life, when the rumen is more prepared to receive diversified feeds. The production and composition of milk are influenced by breed, number of calvings, nutrition, age, and lactation period of the cow, among other factors. The objective of this study was to determine the volume of milk produced by Purunã cows from the third month of lactation until weaning. For this, 59 cows raised at the Model Farm Research Station of the Agronomic Institute of Paraná, Ponta Grossa/PR were used. The following were evaluated every 28 days, from the 3rd to the 7th month of lactation: body weight, body condition score, and milk volume. The data were submitted to ANOVA, and the means were compared by Tukey's test, at 5% probability. The lactation period influenced the milk volume (P = 0.000), being higher in the 3rd month (5.70 L/animal/day) and lower in the 7th month (2.84 L/animal/day). It is concluded that, as lactation progresses, milk volume decreases, while the body weight increases, indicating lower mobilization of body reserves in Purunã cows.
