Abstract: Objective: To understand the difficulties encountered by obstetric nursing residents in identifying cases and appropriate management, in addition to describing how obstetric nursing residents behave in cases of pregnant women who experience intimate partner violence. Methodology: This is a descriptive research with a qualitative approach carried out with 28 obstetric nursing residents in the State of Rio de Janeiro. The recruitment of research participants was carried out using the snowball technique, also known as informant chain or snowball. Data collection took place in the first half of 2023 through semi-structured interviews. Data analysis occurred qualitatively using Laurence Bardin's content analysis. Results: four categories emerged: (I) Intimate partner violence seen as a social taboo; (II) Difficulties in approaching the issue of violence during nursing care; (III) Care strategies used to combat violence; (IV) Recognition of gaps in residents' knowledge on the topic of intimate partner violence during pregnancy. Conclusion: Although the literature highlights the repercussions of violence during pregnancy, this phenomenon is still marked by social invisibility, making early identification and prevention measures a challenge. The results of the study showed that although the residence contributes to enabling contact with pregnant women in situations of IPV, the gap in teaching regarding this phenomenon contributes to inadequate case management.
