Abstract: Linguistic variation is essential for understanding the vast cultural and social diversity of Brazil, a country marked by numerous regional identities and distinct ways of communicating. In this context, sertanejo music stands out as a significant platform for the circulation and legitimization of various language varieties, especially those connected to rural life. For decades, the genre has not only portrayed life in the countryside but also incorporated and disseminated linguistic features characteristic of its communities, thereby valuing non-standard forms of Brazilian Portuguese. This article focuses on the analysis of the song “As menina da pecuária”, performed by Ana Castela and Léo & Raphael (2021), using it as an example of rural and contemporary linguistic practices within modern sertanejo music. The choice of this song is justified by its national popularity and its clear use of linguistic features that bridge tradition and modernity in the Brazilian countryside. Our study is grounded in two main theoretical frameworks: William Labov’s Variationist Sociolinguistics, which explores the relationship between linguistic variation and social factors, and Marcos Bagno’s Pedagogy of Linguistic Variation, which emphasizes the importance of recognizing and valuing language diversity as a means to combat prejudice and promote inclusive education. The guiding research question is: how do the linguistic variables in “As menina da pecuária” reflect systematic patterns of variation linked to social factors, and in what ways do these variants contribute to identity construction and the fight against linguistic prejudice in Brazil? The objectives are to identify and analyze linguistic variation phenomena in the song lyrics, connecting them to social and cultural factors; to discuss the role of such variations in shaping contemporary rural identities; and to reflect on their relevance in challenging linguistic discrimination.
