Abstract: The high demand for the reuse of by-products from agricultural, urban, and industrial activities has driven the growing interest in research on composting. This highlights the need not only to understand the composting process but also to analyze how these products, considered additives, can positively or negatively affect this process. In this context, the present study aims to compile information on the composting process as well as the additives and how they influence this process, either positively or negatively. Various products are used in the composting process, such as sewage sludge, thermophosphate, potassium sulfate, lime, biochar, kitchen scraps, wood chips, polyethylene tubes, zeolite, polyethylene glycol, biochar, red mud, fly ash, among others. Many of these products provide specific attributes to the composting process, while others may have negative effects depending on their concentration. It is important to note that many of these additives may contain high levels of nutrients and heavy metals, which can pose serious risks to plants, animals, and the environment. Based on this information, it can be concluded that the effects of mineral, organic, and biological additives in the composting process can range from positive to negative or even inert. Special attention should be given to the use of additives that may contain high levels of heavy metals or nutrients, such as sewage sludge and red mud. On the other hand, biochar can provide various benefits, such as water retention and ease of aeration within the compost.
