Abstract: Through the study of DNA it was possible to discover the principle of genetic uniqueness. With the use of the National Genetic Profiles Bank, the production of evidence and proof of authorship of crimes in judicial processes that are difficult to elucidate in Brazil has been increasingly facilitated. The objective of this work was to analyze the evolution of genetic profile banks since their creation and point out their applications in solving criminal investigations in Brazil. This is a narrative review of the literature, using the following descriptors: “Forensic genetics”; “Criminal identification”; “RIBPG”; “CODIS” and “Law No. 12,654”. 21 articles published from 2014 onwards were found in the Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo), National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) and Google Scholar databases, which supported and provided the basis for the study. The arguments of the present study were segmented into four distinct sections: History and creation of the National Genetic Profiles Bank; Genetic profiles and markers; Registration growth of profiles and categories established by CODIS and Coincidences and assisted investigations. It is concluded that the National Genetic Profiles Bank has been crucial in solving crimes in Brazil, increasing efficiency in identifying and capturing criminals over the years.
