Abstract: The Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) in its 2019 exam showed that Brazil scored 404 points in science (below the OECD average of 489 points). These results may suggest challenges in science teaching in Brazil, such as gaps in the understanding of scientific concepts and the application of scientific skills in real-world situations. In this context, experimentation can emerge as an instrument to mitigate and improve this negative result, since experimentation allows students to understand chemistry in practice and feel that they are an active part of the learning process, able to make choices and express opinions. This method is crucial for student development and is complemented by the use of other educational strategies that stimulate curiosity, moving away from traditional classes and empowering the student as the protagonist in the teaching-learning process. In order to make chemistry teaching more engaging and relevant for students, this work proposes a didactic intervention involving the use of an ebook on handmade soap and an experimental lesson, with an emphasis on the production of coconut soap using the “hot process” method.
