Abstract: Patient safety is a fundamental aspect of healthcare provision, and its assessment has become a global priority. According to the World Health Organization, millions of patients suffer harm as a result of inadequate care in healthcare institutions every year. In this context, safety protocols have been developed to minimize risks and ensure safe and effective care. Nursing, as a profession in constant interaction with patients, plays a crucial role in implementing and evaluating these practices. The aim of this study was to identify in the literature how nursing staff can actively participate in the evaluation and improvement of patient safety protocols. The study is an Integrative Literature Review with the guiding question: What are the contributions of the nursing team in evaluating and improving patient safety protocols? The inclusion criteria for this review were: articles published in the last five years (2019-2023), available in full, in Portuguese. The articles were collected in two stages. Firstly, a search was carried out in the Virtual Health Library (VHL) databases, PubMed, using descriptors such as “patient safety”, “nursing” and “safety protocols”. and English, which addressed the participation of the nursing team in the evaluation and improvement of patient safety protocols. Articles that did not present empirical evidence, non-systematic literature reviews, and publications that did not refer directly to the role of nursing in safety protocols were excluded. The data was organized into an analytical category, allowing the identification of patterns and gaps in nursing practices related to safety protocols. One of the main findings was the importance of continuous training for nursing staff in patient safety. Studies such as that by Oliveira et al. (2021) point out that regular training programs help nurses to keep up to date with the best safety practices and procedures. Another relevant aspect identified was effective communication between members of the healthcare team and the involvement of nurses in drawing up and reviewing safety protocols. The contributions of the nursing team in evaluating and improving patient safety protocols are crucial to promoting a safer and more effective care environment. The studies analyzed show that the engagement and adequate proportion of nurses have a positive impact on the quality of care and patient safety.
