Abstract: Heart failure (HF) is a condition in which the heart is unable to pump blood in sufficient quantities to meet the body's needs. HF typically develops gradually following a cardiac injury, such as a heart attack or hypertension, and is associated with the loss of potassium and magnesium, as well as an increased risk of cardiac arrhythmias and sudden death. Given these dysfunctions, it is crucial to understand the use of aldosterone receptor antagonists to control and minimize the detrimental effects of aldosterone in patients with HF. Both spironolactone and eplerenone, as aldosterone antagonists, have the ability to block the deleterious effects of this hormone, including the development of myocardial, perivascular, and perimyocytic fibrosis. Therefore, this review provides valuable contributions to identifying factors that affect patient health, highlighting that the use of these antagonists can benefit patients by preventing the progression of cardiac and renal lesions with positive effects on reducing mortality, morbidity, and the progression of HF and associated pathologies.
