Abstract: Currently, there has been a significant increase in cases of skin cancer in Brazil, accounting for approximately one third of all cancer cases. A widely recognized preventive strategy for this pathology is the regular application of sunscreens, aiming to delay skin aging and mitigate the risk of developing skin cancer. The predominant components in these products are synthetic filters, responsible for establishing a protective barrier against ultraviolet radiation. In order to explore sustainable alternatives for the formulation of cosmetic sunscreens, the scientific community is undertaking research efforts to evaluate the effectiveness of the use of natural filters, exemplified by Curcuma Longa, as a natural, safe and viable option to replace synthetic filters. This approach aims to highlight the potential of substances from Brazilian biodiversity, which have intrinsic photoprotective and antioxidant properties, of extreme importance for composing photoprotective cosmetic formulations. This article is an exploratory and integrative review, with the main research focus on the use of Curcuma longa, particularly curcumin, in cosmetic formulations with photoprotective action. Data collection was conducted through research in renowned electronic databases, such as Google Scholar, Science Direct, Scopus, Pubmed and SciELO. The studies examined cover the period between 2011 and 2024, providing a comprehensive view of the most relevant aspects regarding scientific development in this specific area.
