Abstract: The increasing demand for multifunctional products has significantly driven the growth of the cosmetic industry in recent decades. In this scenario, the floristic biodiversity of Brazilian biomes, rich in species with unique characteristics, can further enhance the cosmetics and dermocosmetics market. Annatto, popularly known, is a plant native to South and Central America, with several species, and stands out for its richness in carotenoids, such as bixin and norbixin, which give it a reddish-yellow color, in addition to bioactive compounds, such as tocotrienols and geranylgeraniol, with therapeutic potential. These compounds offer beneficial effects and play a key role in promoting health and well-being. The main application of annatto is in the production of natural colorific and dyes, widely used in the food, textile, and pharmaceutical industries, among others. Its versatility as an ingredient provides a wide range of benefits, being especially effective in the cosmetic industry, thanks to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and photoprotective properties. These qualities meet the growing consumer demand for natural, effective, and sustainable alternatives. Thus, annatto is positioned as a promising ingredient in the evolution of cosmetics, combining health and environmental benefits.
