Abstract: The article presents the results of a research that aimed to compare the situations experienced by public higher education institutions located in the interior of the Brazilian Amazon and in Porto, Portugal, in their fight against the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and to understand the impacts on the teaching and learning processes. From a methodological point of view, managers and professors from four courses at four institutions were interviewed. Content analysis of the interviewees' speeches allowed to know that education mediated by digital technologies has its value, especially for theoretical activities, or for various meetings, but not for curricular components that require handling materials and practical activities essential for some educational and professional areas. It also allowed to recognize that remote activities, in comparison with face-to-face activities, weaken the socialization of students with critical, creative and participatory environments.
