Abstract: In this chapter, we seek to understand the understanding of the Orient in Jean de Mandeville's Travels, particularly with regard to the animals living in those regions. Written in the mid-14th century, the book narrates the journey of a knight named Jean de Mandeville through Asian lands. Combining information from various travel books, as well as knowledge inherited from Antiquity, the work, currently considered based on an imaginary journey, not only achieves a coupling of knowledge but also adds new insights into those regions. Thus, it presents a singular world, constructed through real and imaginary aspects. Therefore, in our analysis, we will begin with the author's conception of the marvelous, which, besides constituting an important point in the construction of knowledge of nature in the period, was also related to different sensations, such as fear and pleasure. Thus, we will not view creatures currently considered real, such as elephants, and those considered unreal, such as dragons and griffins, as distinct.
