Abstract: In any communication event, including teaching-learning situations, the context will influence the quality of understanding among communicators. In order to learn Portuguese, it is important that the student participates in the construction of the context during communication in the classroom. This work intended to present an appropriate conception of context during communication in the Portuguese classroom, enabling maximum cognitive gains for the student. The methodology used was bibliographical research, considering national and international authors in the area of linguistic pragmatics. The conception of communication was resumed, according to a code model, moving on to Grice's inferential model, which explained the formation of context and understanding during communication based on the intentions of speakers/listeners. Next, the points in which this theory does not account for how human beings communicate their thoughts and how the context is formed and transformed during communication were highlighted. It was shown how Sperber and Wilson try to resolve these gaps in their Relevance Theory. Situations in the classroom that promote the learner's participation in the construction of the context, as described in the Relevance Theory, were analyzed, noting that such a basis for the teaching-learning of the Portuguese Language is the most effective.
