Abstract: Latin American economies have historically been prone to experiencing recurrent financial crises, which has represented a significant obstacle to their growth and development. These turbulences have originated from a combination of internal and external factors. Internally, macroeconomic imbalances such as excessive fiscal and current account deficits, unsustainable debt accumulation, and inadequate economic policies have undermined financial stability. Moreover, the fragility of national financial systems, with poor regulation and supervision, have amplified the effects of shocks and exacerbated imbalances. Externally, countries in the region have been vulnerable to global financial contagion, capital outflows, and adverse shocks in commodity prices and trade conditions. Crises have caused severe consequences, such as GDP contractions, increased unemployment, deterioration of social indicators, and an increase in poverty and inequality. To face these turbulences, governments have implemented various policies, ranging from fiscal and monetary adjustments to financial rescue programs and debt renegotiations. However, the effectiveness of these measures has been variable, and limitations in their scope have become evident. From this experience, key lessons emerge: the need to strengthen sound macroeconomic policies, develop solid and well-regulated financial systems, promote productive diversification, and foster greater regional integration to mitigate the impact of external shocks.
