TROPICALISTAS: OUSADIAS EM NOITES DE HAPPENINGS E COMUNICAÇÕES INTERROMPIDAS
Hostilizados à direita e à esquerda,
Caetano Veloso e Gilberto Gil vivenciaram os
efeitos de uma série de embates simbólicos,
em dois happenings aqui analisados à luz de
Pierre Bourdieu: o discurso de Caetano contra
as vaias a ambos no 3º Festival Internacional
da Canção, em setembro de 1968; e o
espetáculo na boate Sucata, em outubro,
interditado por autoridades policiais com base
em notícias sobre supostos “desrespeitos” ao
Hino Nacional e aos militares. Tais eventos
foram divulgados e julgados pela imprensa da
época, o que deu margem a que fossem ainda
mais amplificados os efeitos dessas disputas
de sentido. Resultado: prisão e exílio. Mas,
50 anos depois, o legado tropicalista continua
em discussão. E os baianos, apesar dessas
interrupções, percorreram trajetórias marcadas
por disputas simbólicas posteriores. Hoje,
ocupam os lugares de figuras de autoridade,
em seu campo preferencial e, periodicamente,
ultrapassando-o.

Abstract:
Felling the hostility of the right
and of the left, Caetano Veloso and Gilberto
Gil had experienced the effects of a series of
symbolic clashes, in two happenings that we
analyze here, in accordance with the Pierre
Bourdieu’s theory: Caetano’s speech against
the boos to both at the 3rd International Song
Festival, in September 1968; and the spectacle
at the Sucata nightclub in October, which was
banned by police authorities based on reports
of alleged “disrespect” to the National Anthem and the military. These events were
publicized and judged by the press of that time, which gave scope for further amplifying
the effects of these disputes of meaning. Outcome: imprisonment and exile. But, 50
years later, the tropicalist legacy is still under discussion. And Gil and Caetano, in spite
of these interruptions, went through trajectories that was marked by later symbolic
disputes. Today, they occupy the places of authority figures, in their preferential field
and, periodically, surpassing it.
