Abstract: Among the diseases that affect bone metabolism, periodontitis is an immuno-inflammatory disease whose pathogenesis involves the host's response to a dysbiotic biofilm, which can lead to the progressive destruction of alveolar bone and tooth loss, compromising mastication, aesthetics, and quality of life. This chapter discusses the main experimental models used for the study of periodontitis, which are essential for understanding the disease and testing new treatments. Additionally, it addresses the medicinal role of plants, emphasizing the therapeutic potential of Combretum leprosum Mart., highlighting the value of one of its secondary metabolites, triterpenes, in bone health
