Abstract: INTRODUCTION: Anxiety is a vague and unpleasant feeling of fear, apprehension, characterized by tension or discomfort derived from the anticipation of danger, of something unknown or strange (Allen AJ, Leonard H, Swedo SE 1995). In children, emotional development influences the causes and the way in which both normal and pathological fears and concerns manifest themselves. Unlike adults, children may not recognize their fears as exaggerated or irrational, especially younger ones (Swedo SE, Leonard HL, Allen AJ.1994). METHODOLOGY: This is a literature review, of a narrative type, which aims to describe anxiety and its treatments, gpharmacological and non-pharmacological, from a theoretical point of view, through materials that have already been published on the topic in question, through analysis and interpretation of literature. The inclusion criteria were: articles in Portuguese and English; published between 2022 and 2024 and which addressed the themes proposed for this research, review-type studies made available in full. The exclusion criteria were: duplicate articles, available in abstract form, which did not directly address the proposal studied and which did not meet the other inclusion criteria. DISCUSSION: Anxiety and fear become recognized as pathological when they are exaggerated, disproportionate in relation to the stimulus, or qualitatively different from what is observed as the norm in that age group and interfere with quality of life, emotional comfort or daily performance of the individual. Such exaggerated reactions to anxiogenic stimuli develop, more commonly, in individuals with an inherited neurobiological predisposition (Hirshfeld DR ET AL 1999). CONCLUSION: We see that there is a need for reconciliation between pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment, be it physical exercise, therapies and other methods.
