Abstract: The objective of the present study was to optimize the effluent treatment process of a soft drink manufacturing industry by using pequi residues as an adsorbent in the removal of contaminants from the effluent, in tertiary treatment. For this purpose, the dry biomass of pequi residues (mesocarp and epicarp) was prepared from drying in an oven (70ºC) and grinding in a ball mill, and the physicochemical characteristics were determined: pH, ash content, titratable acidity, pH in the zero charge point (pHPCZ), Maximum Adsorption Capacity with methylene blue dye and determination of acidic and basic groups. The coagulation/flocculation assays were carried out in the treated effluent from the industry, using the coagulant PolyAluminum Chloride (PAC) and the pequi biosorbent, in predetermined dosages, using Jar-Test equipment, in order to evaluate the efficiency in relation to the main effluent release parameters and the optimal dosage of the biosorbent. The results of the tests using the combination of PAC coagulant in the dosage of 60 mg.L-1 and pequi biomass in the dosage of 15 mg.L-1 showed an efficiency above 70% for most of the parameters analyzed in the effluent. With the use of the biosorbent, the total phosphorus concentration in the effluent reached 0.01 mg.L-1, reaching a reduction of 96.5% in relation to the conventionally treated effluent.
