Abstract: Isotretinoin, a medication derived from vitamin A, is widely used to treat severe acne, especially when other treatments have no effect. However, there are concerns about its possible side effects, including its association with mental disorders. The present research aims to address isotretinoin, known for its benefits and effectiveness in treating acne, and its side effects that range from mild to depression and suicidal ideation. The method used to prepare this article consisted of a bibliographic and qualitative review. The effects of isotretinoin are believed to be linked to the way the medication impacts the central nervous system, interfering with neurotransmitters such as serotonin that regulate mood. However, the relationship is still not completely clear and research is inconclusive in this regard. To reduce risks, strict medical monitoring and psychological assessment of patients undergoing treatment with isotretinoin are recommended.
