THE PSYCHOLOGY OF AGING: ANALYSIS OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF GEROPSYCHOLOGY IN LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN.
Introdução: O envelhecimento populacional abre novas oportunidades e amplia o campo profissional para que todas as disciplinas respondam a esse fenômeno, na gerontologização das profissões. É assim que a Psicologia deve superar a velhice e construir um papel de cuidado adequado com base em conhecimentos e evidências, mas ao mesmo tempo buscando compreender o fenômeno com as características territoriais que impactariam o psiquismo ao longo do envelhecimento. Objetivo: Analisar a oferta de programas de pós-graduação na área de Psicogerontologia no continente latino-americano e no Caribe. Metodologia: Procedeu-se à análise da oferta programática existente no continente em diferentes graus de formação em Psicogerontologia. Conclusões: Há pouca formação dos profissionais, o que repercute em uma escassa formação e preparo para o atendimento profissional ao idoso, surgiu um grande desafio até o momento para fortalecer a área, principalmente pela geração de pesquisas que dêem conta da realidade e particularidade do envelhecimento nos vários territórios. Discussão: A escassa formação e espaço para a Psicogerontologia no campo da psicologia podem ser analisados como uma forma de discriminação ou preconceito a ser levado em consideração, portanto, é de vital importância buscar mecanismos para seu desenvolvimento e expansão.

Abstract:
Introduction: Population aging provides new opportunities and broadens the professional field for all disciplines to respond to this phenomenon, in the gerontologization of professions. This is how Psychology must overcome old ageisms and build an appropriate care role based on knowledge and evidence, but at the same time seeking to understand the phenomenon with the territorial characteristics that would impact the psyche throughout aging. Objective: To analyze the postgraduate program offer in the Geropsychology area in the Latin American continent and the Caribbean. Methodology: We proceeded to analyze the existing programmatic offer in the continent in different degrees of training in Geropsychology. Conclusions: There is little training of professionals, which affects a scarce training and preparation to professionally care for the elderly, a great challenge to date to strengthen the area has emerged, especially by generating research that accounts for reality and particularity of aging in the various territories. Discussion: The scarce training and space for Geropsychology within the field of psychology could be analyzed as a form of discrimination or ageism to take into consideration, therefore, it is vitally important to seek mechanisms for its development and expansion.
