The effectiveness of cryotherapy on oral mucositis in cancer patients
Objetivo: Avaliar a eficácia da crioterapia na mucosite oral em pacientes oncológicos. Métodos: Trata-se de uma revisão sistemática da literatura, onde foram pesquisados ensaios clínicos randomizados, usando os seguintes descritores: “oral cryotherapy”, “oral mucositis” com o operador booleano AND. Resultados: Dos 74 artigos, foram encontrados 10 artigos na base de dados Europe PMC e 04 artigos no Pubmed. Após a leitura dos artigos, foram selecionados 05 artigos. A mucosite oral acontece frequentemente em pacientes que são submetidos a tratamentos de câncer e pode reduzir a qualidade de vida destes pacientes. Seu aparecimento acontece em torno do 5-7 dia depois do tratamento antineoplásico. A crioterapia pode prevenir a mucosite reduzindo a penetração de agentes quimioterápicos na membrana mucosa da boca devido a vasoconstrição. Na maioria dos estudos, a crioterapia foi administrada por 30 minutos durante a infusão do quimioterápico e demonstra efeito benéfico na prevenção/tratamento da mucosite. Conclusão: A crioterapia para prevenir/tratar a mucosite oral é viável, principalmente, se a quimioterapia for administrada como uma infusão curta e o quimioterápico tiver meia-vida curta. O tempo mais relatado é o de terapia com gelo por 30 minutos e no momento da infusão do agente quimioterápico.

Abstract:
Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of cryotherapy in oral mucositis in cancer patients. Methods: This is a systematic review of the literature, where randomized clinical trials were searched, using the following descriptors: “oral cryotherapy”, “oral mucositis” with the Boolean operator AND. Results: Of the 74 articles, 10 articles were found in the Europe PMC database and 04 articles in Pubmed. After reading the articles, 05 articles were selected. Oral mucositis occurs frequently in patients who are undergoing cancer treatments and can reduce the quality of life of these patients. Its onset occurs around 5-7 days after antineoplastic treatment. Cryotherapy can prevent mucositis by reducing the penetration of chemotherapeutic agents into the mucous membrane of the mouth due to vasoconstriction. In most studies, cryotherapy was administered for 30 minutes during the infusion of chemotherapy and shows a beneficial effect in the prevention / treatment of mucositis. Conclusion: Cryotherapy to prevent / treat oral mucositis is feasible, especially if chemotherapy is administered as a short infusion and the chemotherapy has a short half-life. The most reported time is that of ice therapy for 30 minutes and at the time of infusion of the chemotherapeutic agent.
