Abstract: The writer, poet, professor, History critic and ethnologist, native from Maranhão, Antônio Gonçalves Dias (1823-1864), claims establishing the Diccionario da Lingua Tupy (1858) as a preliminary study on the language of indigenous groups from the Brazilian Coastline, later, allowing him to characterize the customs observed. To understand Gonçalves Dias’ proposal it was necessary to contextualize the Diccionario’s production, thus, we used informations of other historical documents. The main objective of our text is presenting the indigenous ethnic groups found in the Diccionario. Concurrently, we tried to identify if it was possible to recognize the linguistic diversity of the Tupi language in Brazil during the period in which the Diccionario was written. We believed that the historical study of the Pará’s indigenous communities of the 18th and 19th Centuries might reveal valuable information on these population. Furthermore, we verified the methodological possibility of using literary texts as sources for Environmental History.
