Abstract: Based on the theoretical foundations of French semiotics, this research analyzes the short story “Maria”, by the Brazilian writer Conceição Evaristo. The tale is narrated in third person, but mostly reveals Maria’s point of view, who is the protagonist of the story. She is a black maid and a single mother of three children who suffers social, gender and race violence. We use elements of the generative process of meaning in order to apprehend the form of construction of the actor Maria and also the meanings and values of the tale.
