Abstract: This work will analyze the theory of innovation cycles, developed by Joseph Schumpeter. The purpose is to analyze Joseph Schumpeter's theory of economic development, as well as the concepts of innovation, entrepreneur and capital related to it. To this end, the hypothetical deductive approach method was used, through the selection of bibliographies, scientific articles and documents related to the theme, reading and recording the material and, at the end, presenting the results. Schumpeter explains that innovation represents the insertion of a new product, method or organizational structure, which creates a rupture in the economic system. The author alludes that the concept of development cannot be confused with that of economic growth, being the transformation of the economy from within and not imposed from outside. Schumpeter points to technology as the main driving force of the economy, and innovation as the engine for the development of nations. To this end, the existence of the entrepreneur is necessary, as he carries out new combinations of productive means, responsible for promoting economic development. The entrepreneur must take risks in an attempt to acquire profit and, therefore, be successful. It is observed that Schumpeter demonstrates that technology plays a determining role in the productive organization of companies, being responsible for offering dynamism to the system and defining the level of competition between companies.
