Abstract: Currently, the contamination of natural resources by metals, resulting from human activities, is a serious environmental problem. Among trace elements, chromium (Cr) stands out due to its toxicity and widespread industrial use. The objective of this study was to quantify the concentrations of Cr in soils, waters, and agricultural sediments in the municipality of Bom Retiro, located in the Serra Catarinense region, known for its agricultural activities. A total of 85 samples of soil, water, and sediment were collected and analyzed for pH and Cr content. The data were compared with environmental standards, specifically CONAMA resolutions 420/2009 and 454/2012 for soils and sediments, and 357/2005 for waters. Soil and sediment samples showed Cr levels within legal limits. However, 14 water samples exceeded the allowed limit for Cr, highlighting the need for continuous monitoring and mitigation of pollutant sources. The retention of metals in soil can affect ecosystems, with risks of bioaccumulation and trophic magnification, impacting human and environmental health. Therefore, sustainable management strategies are needed to reduce heavy metal pollution in agricultural areas.
