• Abstract: The objective of this chapter is to explore the trends and challenges faced by research and knowledge production in Latin America. For this purpose, a descriptive methodology is proposed with an analytical approach through documentary research, public science and technology policies and the organizations that They promote them in the region, indicators of investments in Science and Technology are used at a global and regional level, providing results regarding how research systems operate. They review and analyze the figures of academic production and patents, establishing data in each of the sections. in tables and graphs that allow us to appreciate the metrics of the research activity. The results confirm the importance of Latin American academic productivity in terms of visibility, cooperation indicators and open Access practices. Finally, conclusions are presented regarding the hopeful aspects that must be strengthened to improve cooperation networks, boost private investment in science and technology and continue with the practices of democratizing knowledge and the aspects that must be strengthened in terms of innovation with a greater number of patents that allow greater advances in technology and its applications to the market and establish public policy conditions that prevent the brain drain of researchers in the region.
