TENDÊNCIAS RECENTES DOS ESTUDOS DE CIDADES MÉDIAS NO BRASIL: METROPOLIZAÇÃO DO ESPAÇO NA MICRORREGIÃO DE CONSELHEIRO LAFAIETE, CONGONHAS-MINAS GERAIS
O trabalho, resultado de pesquisas de mestrado com desdobramentos teórico-metodológicos que deu origem ao livro Congonhas: centro urbano emergente no colar perimetropolitano de Belo Horizonte-MG, publicado em 2014, apresenta a síntese fundamentada em revisão bibliográfica sobre as tendências recentes de estudos sobre cidades médias e a pesquisa exploratória da microrregião de Conselheiro Lafaiete, localizada na mesorregião de Belo Horizonte, capital do Estado Minas Gerais. A metodología analítico-reflexiva, buscou compreender o papel de agentes econômicos, políticos e sociais no processo de reestruturação urbana e regional, que participam das alterações socioespaciais pelas quais passam as cidades médias mineiras e o fenômeno de crescimento dessas cidades, particularmente o processo de metropolização do espaço nas periferias urbanas de Belo Horizonte. Possibiltou, ainda, verificar que a investigação sobre cidades e suas relações com os sistemas urbanos tem ampla tradição na geografia, assim como estes sistemas têm com os processos de desenvolvimento regional, com as atividades econômicas, com os aspectos demográficos e com as intervenções políticas. A aplicação do conceito de escala de urbanização permitiu analisar e explicar os processos espaciais que têm caracterizado o crescimento urbano-industrial e a construção de um entendimento sobre cidade média, como rol dinamizador na rede urbana entre a metrópole e as cidades de pequeno porte, no contexto regional. O trabalho conseguiu superar a exclusividade de parâmetros quantitativos, para além de uma classificação ou status da cidade do ponto de vista funcional. Permitiu incorporar outros elementos nas abordagens sobre esse nível de cidade (fluxos de pessoas, mercadorias, decisões políticas e investimentos, que por eles se materializam) e o papel das cidades médias na descentralização/desconcentração econômica e populacional na região metropolitana.

Abstract:
The work, the result of master's research with theoretical-methodological developments that gave rise to the book Congonhas: an emerging urban center in the perimetropolitan collar of Belo Horizonte-MG, published in 2014, presents the synthesis based on a bibliographical review on the recent trends of studies on Medium-sized cities and the exploratory exploration of the Conselheiro Lafaiete micro-region, located in the mesoregion of Belo Horizonte, capital of the state of Minas Gerais. The analytical-reflexive methodology sought to understand the role of economic, political and social agents in the process of urban and regional restructuring, who participate in the socio-spatial changes through which the medium-sized cities of Minas Gerais and the phenomenon of growth of these cities, particularly the process of metropolization Of the space in the urban peripheries of Belo Horizonte. It also made it possible to verify that research on cities and their relationship with urban systems has a long tradition in geography, as these systems have with the processes of regional development, economic activities, demographic aspects and political interventions. The application of the concept of scale of urbanization allowed to analyze and explain the spatial processes that have characterized the urban-industrial growth and the construction of an understanding about the average city, as a dynamic role in the urban network between the metropolis and the small cities, in the Regional context. The work managed to overcome the exclusivity of quantitative parameters, beyond a classification or status of the city from the functional point of view. It allowed to incorporate other elements in the approaches on this level of city (flows of people, goods, political decisions and investments that materialize for them) and the role of the medium cities in the decentralization / economic and populational deconcentration in the metropolitan region.
