Abstract:
Colostrum, the initial secretion
of the mammary gland after birth, is an
important source of immunity. The objective
was to evaluate the quality of fresh and frozen
colostrum as a function of the time of pregnancy.
Samples of fresh and frozen colostrum were
analyzed by the refractometer from the time of
pregnancy of the sheep. The Tukey’s test was
used with significance level of 5%. The mean
total Brix solids (%) in relation to the time of
pregnancy of the ewes did not differ (P> 0.05)
between fresh and frozen samples. Of the
total samples analyzed, 100% presented high
total solids quality higher than 18% Brix, which
corresponds to mean concentration> 50 mg /
mL of IgG. Cut intervals between 18 and 22 of
total solids of Brix (%) were demonstrated by
the digital refractometry technique among the
evaluated factors. After analyzing the results, it
is concluded that the quality of the IgG estimated is verified in samples of fresh and frozen colostrum regardless of the pregnancy time
of the Santa Inês sheep, which does not compromise the occurrence of the passive
immunity transfer of the lambs.
