Abstract: Food waste represents one of the greatest global challenges, impacting not only on food safety but also the economy and environmental sustainability. It is estimated that millions of tons of food are lost throughout the production chain due to storage, transportation, and preservation failures. In this scenario, smart packaging emerges as an innovative alternative, offering tools capable of more efficiently monitoring and preserving food quality. Three main categories of technologies can be employed in this type of packaging: time and temperature indicators, which allow monitoring of storage and transportation conditions; freshness indicators, which provide information on the sensory quality and conservation status of products; and biosensors, capable of accurately detecting microbiological and chemical changes. These solutions have the potential to extend the shelf life of food, reduce losses, minimize health risks, and even contribute to more sustainable practices, aligned with the principles of the circular economy. However, challenges such as high production costs, technological complexity, and the difficulty of industrial scaling still limit their widespread application in the food industry. Therefore, the objective of this study was to review the latest advances in the literature on smart packaging.
