Abstract: The purpose of this literature review is to examine in depth the management of virtual environments in the context of distance education at the higher education level. Through bibliographic, analytical, synthetic, and descriptive methods, an exhaustive review of relevant sources, including Google Scholar, was conducted. It was found that incorporating technologies such as email, discussion forums, collaborative murals, and social media (such as Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram) into virtual environments can have a positive impact on students' academic performance. It highlights the importance of higher education teachers staying up-to-date and actively participating in the design and implementation of virtual environments to ensure quality education. It is essential to ensure continuity in the use and management of these environments throughout the academic progress of students, thus promoting effective and meaningful learning in the virtual environment.
