Abstract: The high penetration of distributed generation (DG) in the distribution network offers many benefits in terms of high energy quality, efficiency and low carbon emissions in the energy system. However, efficient islanding detection and immediate GD disconnection are essential to prevent equipment damage, interference with network protection and safety risks for maintenance personnel. Islanding detection techniques are classified mainly into remote, active, passive and hybrid techniques. Of these, passive techniques are the most advantageous due to less degradation in energy quality, lower cost and greater use by energy utilities. However, the main limitations of these techniques are that they have large zones of non-detection (ZND) and require threshold configuration. Various signal processing techniques and intelligent classifiers have been used to overcome the limitations of the passive technique. Signal processing techniques, in particular, are adopted due to their versatility, stability, economy and ease of modification. This article presents a comprehensive review of the signal processing techniques used to improve common passive islanding detection techniques. A performance comparison between island processing techniques based on signal processing with existing techniques will also be addressed. We will also describe the relative advantages and limitations of signal processing techniques.
