Abstract: Despite the importance of substrates, there are few studies on the ideal proportion of soil and cattle manure for the emergence and initial growth of pumpkin crops. Thus, the objective was to evaluate the emergence rate and initial growth of pumpkin varieties in different substrates in the Northeast of Pará. The experiment was carried out in an open greenhouse at the Universidade Federal Rural da Amazônia, Capitão Poço campus, between April and May 2023. The experimental design adopted was completely randomized in a 2 x 4 factorial scheme, with two varieties (Jacarezinho and Sergipana) and 4 substrates, with 3 repetitions. The substrates were washed sand, local soil, 75% local soil + 25% tanned cattle manure and 50% local soil + 50% tanned cattle manure. Four and ten days after sowing, the pumpkin emergence rate was evaluated. The total emergency speed index was also evaluated. At 15 days after sowing, plant height (AP), stem diameter (DC) and stem length (CC) were evaluated. The data were subjected to analysis of variance using the F test (p<0.05) and when significant, the Tukey test (p<0.05) was applied, using the AgroEstat Software. There was greater emergence of pumpkin of the Jacarezinho variety in the sand substrate 4 days after sowing. On the other hand, there was no difference in emergence between substrates for the Sergipana variety. There was no significant difference in the total emergence speed index for the varieties on the different substrates. The highest responses for the AP, DC and CC variables were in the substrate 75% soil + 25% cattle manure, which indicates the importance of organic fertilizer for the initial growth of the pumpkin. Thus, the substrate 75% soil + 25% cattle manure enabled greater initial growth of the varieties.
