Abstract: The present article is situated within the field of supervision in initial nursing education, with particular focus on the context of clinical teaching. It emerges from a process of critical reflection on a number of concerns identified and experienced by the author within the supervisory process in clinical settings. Drawing on the conception of nursing as a profession of both technical-scientific and relational nature, the article highlights the role of supervision as a structuring process in the development of professional identity, autonomy, and reflective competencies. It argues that nursing education should move beyond a purely transmissive model of knowledge, instead privileging experiential, reflective, and contextually grounded learning, supported by a supervisory relationship based on trust, communication, support, and collaborative interaction. The article further advocates for the implementation of a formal supervisory process through a mediating practice aimed at fostering the personal and professional development of nursing students. In this context, it presents an organisational model of the core functions of professional nursing practice—teaching, organisation, observation, feedback and communication, technical execution, and evaluation—emphasising their interdependence in the provision of care. In conclusion, the construction of knowledge in nursing requires systematic, critically reflective, and integrated guidance between theory and practice. Supervision is therefore understood as a key element in promoting the progressive development of autonomy and the consolidation of a competent and humanised professional practice.
