Abstract: Petrópolis is a municipality in the State of Rio de Janeiro that frequently suffers from flooding problems, especially in its wettest period, October to April. This fact is largely due to the characteristics of the relief and its geomorphology, which is quite rugged, high altitudes and the convergence of the water flow to the valley where the city center is located. The city arose as a result of the interest of Emperor Dom Pedro I, who once stayed there overnight during a trip and was enchanted by the climate and its natural beauties. There he decided to establish a reception for his visitors who were not used to the tropical climate. The development and disorganized growth of the city has hindered the natural flow of water and the lack of maintenance of the networks leads, nowadays, to water overflow events. In this way, the proposal of the work is to optimize the river flow throughout the city, proposing points of improvement in the Quitandinha River, next to Coronel Veiga Street, in order to aim at a better drainage to the city, providing points of relief of runoff, most likely through swimming pools. Three points were pre-defined to capture relief points, develop the water flow in the region and propose the solution to dampen the local flow. The intention of the present study is to define the flow rates at the points, establish adequate points for the creation of flow damping points, considering the best condition for expanding the width of the river, and define the most appropriate solution. The proposal is from this study, to create the basis for in future research to find more points of flow relief to promote over the years a large and complete macro-drainage project in the city of Petrópolis and promoting quality of life.
