Abstract: The comprehensive development of students has been a central focus of contemporary discussions in education, especially regarding the interconnection between cognitive, social, and emotional dimensions. The National Common Curricular Base (BNCC, 2017) recommends that schools promote not only the acquisition of academic knowledge but also the development of socio-emotional skills that enable students to act with autonomy, empathy, and cooperation in different social contexts. In this context, schools serve as privileged spaces for coexistence and learning, where students are challenged to navigate differences, resolve conflicts collaboratively, and strengthen affective and social bonds. This bibliographical article analyzes the role of schools in socio-emotional development in elementary school, highlighting the importance of intentional pedagogical practices and active methodologies that foster student empowerment. The discussion is anchored in classical theoretical frameworks, such as Goleman (1995), Wallon (1975), and Vygotsky (1991), as well as in the legal documents governing Brazilian education, highlighting that comprehensive education is not merely a pedagogical trend, but an ethical and legal commitment. By reflecting on the challenges and prospects of socioemotional education, the study seeks to contribute to the understanding of how schools can effectively assume their role of developing critical, participatory individuals prepared for the challenges of contemporary society. Thus, it reaffirms that investing in socioemotional development is an indispensable condition for quality education and for building a more just, democratic, and inclusive society.
