• Abstract: Rectal administration refers to administration through the anus. This route of administration is often used when the patient cannot take the medicine orally or when the desired effect of the medicine is better achieved by rectal absorption. Many medications that are usually taken by mouth can also be given rectally. While this approach may be unpopular and uncomfortable, it plays a vital role in certain clinical conditions. In view of this, the present study aims to verify how proven in the literature on drug delivery systems administered for rectal administration. The search was performed using 2 research platforms: Embase and PubMed. In this integrative review, 10 articles were included after a refined screening. Relevant information from each study was collected and displayed in a table: author(s), year, rectal drug delivery system, or drug used in system development and application. From the analysis of the results of the studies, it was possible to verify that only 3 articles were directed to the application locally and the other studies had rectal applications with systemic effects. In addition, it was observed that although there are studies for the production of retail drug delivery systems, this is still a little explored area and with scarce information.
